Recentment les erupcions volcàniques són notícia amb relativa freqüència, i em sembla interessant parlar de l’incidència de les erupcions volcàniques sobre el clima, des d’un punt de vista molt senzill. Allà vaig.
Les erupcions volcàniques comporten una emissió de gasos a l’atmosfera important. Principalment s’injecta en l’atmosfera vapor d’aigua. Però les erupcions solen anar acompanyades de CO2, SO2, HCl, HF i cendres que són injectades a l’estratosfera fins altituds de 16-32 Km
Alguna cosa molt important en això és que el SO2 ràpidament condensa en l’estratosfera formant aerosols. Els aerosols augmenten l’albedo (percentatge de radiació reflectida respecte a la que arriba), i per això provoquen un descens de la temperatura. Estic parlant a gran escala.
Els aerosols també tenen un altre efecte paral·lel. Actuen com a centre de nucleació de núvols, de cirrus concretament. Aquests també actuen reflectint part de la radiació solar que arriba a la Terra. La cendra emesa també funciona com un aerosol, però aquesta desapareix en qüestió de dies o poques setmanes. També pot afectar destruint l’ozó estratosfèric.
El 1991, el volcà Pinatubo va tenir una erupció, una de les més importants de la història. La seva erupció va suposar un descens de les temperatures d’uns 0,6 º C a l’hemisferi nord i 0,4 º C a escala global. En les gràfiques que habitualment veiem s’observa com el Pinatubo va tenir un efecte determinant en la temperatura:
El Pinatubo injectà en l’atmosfera una quantitat rècord de SO2, uns 17 milions de tones d’aquest compost. I la seva erupció, com podeu veure, va tenir un efecte impressionant a escala global.
Per entendre com pot tenir una erupció volcànica a escala global, us deixo unes imatges interessants.
A l’agost, a les Aleutianes, es va produir una erupció volcànica, del volcà Kasatochi. Aquesta erupció no es pot comparar amb la del Pinatubo, ni molt menys, de fet ha emès al voltant d’1 milió de tones de SO2 (que per no ser 17 milions com el Pinatubo no significa que sigui poc). Doncs bé, la Universitat de Bremen ha elaborat una animació de com el SO2 s’ha repartit en l’hemisferi nord. És interessant per entendre els efectes a escala global que pot tenir una erupció volcànica:
