El Co2 és un gas que ha guanyat molt protegonisme en els últims anys. El famós “Canvi Climàtic” engendrat per Al Gore i altres personatges, alguns d’ells científics, ha centrat en el CO2 la base de la seva 
argumentació.
Pero sabem realment què és el CO2? És comú veure en els mitjans, cortines de fum, xemeneies, indústries contaminants, i totes amb titulars semblants que al·ludeixen al CO2 com causant de tots els mals del planeta. El cas es que es contradictori tot açò quan u s’entera de que el CO2 és un gas incolor, inodor, invisible i en les quantitats que el trobem a l’aire no és per res tòxic. Aquestes primeres dades sobre el CO2 potser comencen a trencar algún esquema.
Per tant, aquests fums que veiem sortir de les xemeneies no son CO2, ni les enfermetats respiratòries son causades per Co2, ni podem olorar-lo ni tastar-lo. De fet, tots nosaltres expulsem CO2 a l’atmosfera cada vegada que respirem, i no per això estem contaminant, o si?
Per fer-nos una idea, la concentració actual de CO2 a l’atmosfera es de 380 ppm (, mentre que, per exemple, a la nostra habitació quan ens alcem de dormir, la concentració pot rondar perfectament els 1000 ppm, això i prou més depenent de l’olor a tigre que hi faça.
L’efecte principal del CO2 sobre l’atmosfera es l’efecte hivernacle, efecte causant de la posible vida a la Terra, i que ha sigut seleccionat per explicar el calentament que s’ha produït els últims 30 anys (tot i que els últims 10 anys la tendència s’ha revertit, ho veurem més endavant). Seguint amb l’efecte hivernacle, son molts els gasos que participen d’aquest procés, els anomenats GEI’s (Gases Efecto Invernadero), on el vapor d’aigua es el major exponent. En quant al CO2, s’han observat amb dades paleoclimàtiques que ha habut époques amb major concentració de CO2 que l’actual però sense cap efecte de calentament. Desde 1998 el CO2 ha seguit incrementant la seva concentració mentre sembla que la temperatura s'ha mantingut estable o fins i tot ha baixat una mica. Click per veure més gran
En cambi, es coneixen moltes utilitats positives del CO2. Les nostres begudes refrescants solen anar acompanyades de CO2, es un bon extintor, un bon refrigerant també, i un bon antioxidant. Però la més important funció del CO2 es que els vegetals utilitzen aquest gas per portar a terme la fotosíntesi. Amb açò, podem gaudir d’una atmosfera amb oxígen per poder viure, a més de que permeteix la creació de la biomassa. Així, un augment del CO2 provocaría un increment en la producció de la biomassa, de segur que els agricultors estarien contents de obtindre més collita.
Així de primeres sembla que el CO2 no és tan dolent. No serà l’ultima vegada que parlem del CO2.
